Went to Barnes and Noble last night and got a book, Chapter After Chapter, my critique partner had been telling me about. It is really wonderful. I’m reading it all the way through, then I am going to try those exercises…I can see where they can make you look at things differently. The idea of slowing down is a good one too…how many different ways have I heard it?
“Stop and smell the roses”
“Look or you’re going to miss it.”
“Make time to…(fill in the blank here)”
“Why are you in such a hurry?”
“You go at everything like a bat out of h*ll!”
“If you don’t have time to do it right, how will you have time to do it over?”
Everyone in the universe is trying to tell me something…guess I’d better STOP and listen! LOL
I used to have this t-shirt that said, “God put me on this Earth to do a certain number of things…right now I’m so far behind I’ll never die.” I believe that!
I am a creature of To Do Lists and Deadlines. If something needs doing, I can’t sit still until it’s done–unless it’s clean house…not in such a hurry on that one. Maybe it’s getting older and realizing I have less time left than I used to have. Maybe it’s that I’m interested in so many things, and I’m a goal-oriented person who wants to do them all? And how much do I miss along the way?
It will take a supreme effort on my part to change that…too many years doing it the “get it done” way…but I can see the benefit. Writing, and life for that matter, is not about the goal line…it’s about the journey. I can see myself right now…get it DONE, but be sure to ENJOY it, too. More goals…or am I missing the point entirely? LOL
