I get up every day at 4 a.m. (except some Thursdays…I crash and burn) and write until I have to go to work.
How in in the H*LL does a person get so motivated to do that every day?? Insane right? My insanity though got over 300,000 words written in 2007…and today I share my secret!
I don’t let myself go back to bed.
If I consider even for one moment–“Oh that mattress is so fine! Just five more minutes!”–I’ll climb back in bed every time and stay in bed until it’s too late to get anything written before my day job.
See, here’s how it goes: the alarm goes off at 3:45 a.m. I jump out of bed and turn it off (note how I keep it far away from the bed–I have to put it on the other end of the room), then I keep walking toward the kitchen to make the coffee imagining the whole time, “Oh God, I can’t do this today! I’m too tired and my head hurts and I need more rest…” etc. etc…loads of excuses running through my head.
But, all the while, I’m making the coffee.
Then while it’s brewing, I walk directly to my computer, sit down and turn it on, open the file immediately, and start. No going back to bed–no choice. After about 15 minutes, I’m okay. I get up, pour the coffee, and take it back to the puter to work for a couple of hours.
It’s the only way I can do it. If I even *once* give myself a chance to climb back into bed, I‘ll turn off the alarm and roll over (which happens sometimes, believe me!)
Shhhh…that’s my secret! Do you have any secrets to stay motivated?
