I took a couple of weeks off after the wild ride that was Nanowrimo, but it’s time to get back on the wagon. 2013 is right around the corner, and I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want to accomplish in the coming year in terms of writing.
I’m a firm believer in documenting goals and tracking progress toward those goals. Also, I believe in setting deadlines for smaller goals along the way…that really works.
I think that’s why Nano gets people writing and helps writers get words on the page—it worked for me. I wrote more in November than I wrote the rest of the year–sad, but true. I’d like to see some progress of that caliber during more than just one month in 2013.
So, in the spirit of “why not do what works?” I’m going to set some goals and implement a tracking system.
I’m in the middle of running my own business as well as taking college accounting classes so I can sit for the CPA exam, so I have to be realistic about what I can get done and remain sane.
I’ll have a weekly word count goal…that will allow for some leeway on bad days—you know those days, when nothing goes according to plan? Over the span of a week, I’ll have some make-up time to bolster those days.
And tracking…let me think about that. I used a spreadsheet when I did Nano, and that was very effective. Also, knowing the word count was posted somewhere in the blogosphere helped keep me honest—and Nano has that nice tracker. I could do something similar on my website.
So yeah, that’s the plan. Who’s with me?
